I want to avoid falling asleep(懸樑刺股)

 

Some Chinese idioms contain two stories at the same time.

It is usually because the two stories have similar meanings, or it is because the two stories can complement each other.

This idiom is an obvious example.

 

During the Han Dynasty in China, there was a young man named (Sun Jing).

He likes studying very much.

He often studies from day to night.

 

Sometimes when he studies for too long, he will start to feel sleepy and he will doze off.

He thought of a way to prevent himself from falling asleep.

 

He tied a rope to the roof beam at home, and he tied the other end of the rope to his hair.

Whenever he wants to doze off, as long as his head is lowered, the rope will pull up his hair and he will feel a lot of pain.

 

He cheered up and he was able to continue his studies.

He uses this attitude to learn.

 

During the Warring States Period in China, there was a young man named (Su Qin).

In order to realize his ideals, he studied very seriously.

 

Sometimes when he studies for too long, he will start to feel sleepy and he will doze off.

He thought of a way to prevent himself from falling asleep.

 

He put an awl on the desk.

Whenever he wanted to doze off, he would pick up this awl and pierce his thigh.

This sharp awl pierced his thigh to bleed, and he would feel very painful.

 

He cheered up and he was able to continue his studies.

中國的戰國時代,有一個名字叫做(蘇秦)的年輕人。

他為了實現自已的理想,所以他很認真地念書。

 

有時候他念書的時間太長,他就會開始感覺困倦,他會打瞌睡。

他為防止自已睡著所以他想了一個方法。

 

他在書桌上放了一把錐子。

每當他想打瞌睡時他就會拿起這把錐子刺自已的大腿,

這把尖銳的錐子把他的大腿刺到流血,他就會覺得很痛。

 

他就因此振作精神,他就能夠繼續念書。

他就是用這種態度去做學問。

 

這句成語是被用來形容一個人有很堅定的學習欲望與意志。
