The water is too little, so there is no way
to raise fish here(牛蹄之涔)
In the Han Dynasty of China, there was a
royal nobleman named Liu An. He edited a book called (Huainanzi).
This book summarizes the academic thoughts
of various schools at that time and is an important and famous classic in
history.
There is a paragraph in this book as
follows.
Why are many organizations unable to retain
good talents?
I think the reason is that the leader of
this organization, when evaluating his subordinates, does not look at the main
merits of this subordinate, but focuses on the minor faults of this
subordinate.
If a person has good morals, this person
will also make some minor mistakes.
No matter how good a person’s reputation
is, this person will never be perfect enough to have no shortcomings.
A dent stepped by a cow's hoof, even if the
dent is full of water, you cannot raise fish in the dent.
It is impossible for a swan to live in a
small beehive.
A good leader should remember these two metaphors
and remind himself at any time that it is impossible to accommodate huge
objects in a small space.
Everyone has their own strengths and
weaknesses. This is normal.
A good leader should objectively evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of the person from the standpoint of the entire
organization.
If we are a leader, the superior ability of
one of our subordinates is very important to the development of the
organization. Even if this person offends us, we still have to reuse him.
If we are a leader, one of our subordinates
cannot help the development of the organization because of lack of superior
capabilities. Even if this person has a good relationship with us, we can't
reuse him.
The meaning of this idiom is to describe a
person in a position where he cannot perform his abilities.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
did you have after hearing this story.
Do you agree with his point of view? What
do you think can be done to evaluate a person objectively?
I hope this story will give you some new
gains.
(The water is too little, so there is
no way to raise fish here)
