Farewell(霸陵折柳)
The name of the capital of the Tang Dynasty
of China is Chang'an. The current name is changed to Xi'an.
The city of Chang'an is located in Shaanxi
Province, China.
Chang'an was the largest city in the world
at that time.
There is a river named Ba on the east side
of Chang'an City.
Many willow trees are planted by the river,
and willow is a tree with strong vitality.
Usually if you break off a branch and
insert it on the ground, the branch will grow into a big tree.
When a person walks across the bridge over
the Bahe River, it is equivalent to leaving Chang'an. So many people were here
to bid farewell at that time.
The earliest compilation of poems in China,
the book (The Book of Songs) stated that when people were seeing off at that
time, they would break a willow branch and give it to those who were leaving.
