During the Tang Dynasty in China, there was
a famous minister whose name was Yuan Dexiu.
After he grew up, his friends called him
(Yuan Zizhi)
There is a story about him in history
books.
He only kept some of his own salary, and he
used most of his salary to help some disadvantaged groups in the county under
his management, such as orphans and widows.
When he left his official post to retire,
his most valuable asset was only a piece of cloth. He has no other valuables at
all, and all his belongings can be taken away with a trolley that carries
firewood.
The house he lives in is very small.
There is no fence in his house, and there
is no lock on the door. He has a very simple life. He likes to drink and play
the guqin.
The prime minister at the time was his good
friend. Their friendship is very good. The prime minister often came to chat
with him.
Someone asked the prime minister.
Why do you attach special importance to
your friendship with him.
The prime minister replied.
He will not flatter me for money and power,
he is equally sincere to anyone.

他只自已的薪水留下一些，他把大部分的俸祿都拿出來接濟他所管理的縣裡面的一些弱勢族群，例如孤兒寡婦等等。
當他離開自已的官職退休的時候，他最值錢的財產只有一匹布。他完全沒有任何其他值錢的東西，他所有的家當用一台搬運木柴的小車就全部可以帶走。
他住的房子很小。
他家沒有圍牆，門上沒有鎖。他生活過得非常簡單，他喜歡喝酒，喜歡彈古琴。
當時的宰相是他的好朋友。他們的交情很好。宰相常常來找他聊天。
有人問這位宰相。
你為什麼特別重視與他的友誼。
宰相回答。
他不會因為金錢與權力而巴結我，他對任何人都是一樣的真誠。
我我每次看見他的臉，都覺得非常的舒服。
他們的另一個好朋友曾說。
現代是一個道德敗壞的時代，但因為有了有他的存在，我才覺得這個時代其實挺好。
他死的時候幾乎沒有留下任何值錢的東西。但他的葬禮上來了很多人。
他的許多親朋好友哭泣，大家都很懷念他。
這句成語的意思是形容一個人有很好的品德操守。
