During the Spring and Autumn Period of
China, there was a famous politician in the Kingdom of Chu, and his name was Qu
Yuan.
He loves his kingdom very much, he wants to
play for the Chu Kingdom, but the king doesn't like him.
The king moved him away from the political
center, and he was assigned to a very remote place.
He was very depressed, and he later
committed suicide by throwing himself into the river.
He is recognized as the first poet in
China, and he has many fans in later generations.
A famous minister of the Han Dynasty of
China is one of them, his name is (Yang Xiong).
He likes (Qu Yuan)'s poems very much.
Every time he read these poems, he would
think of (Qu Yuan's) life.
He felt sad every time, and he shed tears
every time he read it.
But he did not agree with his suicidal
behavior.
He wrote an article, which he wrote in
memory of (Qu Yuan).
There is a paragraph in the article as
follows.
You mentioned in your poem that you feel
that your life is limited. You are like the sun that is about to go down. You
don't have much time.
You hope to have more time to go, but why
did you choose to commit suicide in the end?
I think there will always be ups and downs
in a person's life. We try our best to give full play to our talents at peak
times, but at trough times we should study patiently and wait for opportunities
to come.
This idiom is used to describe a person who
is already very old, and that person's life is about to die, just like the sun
is about to set.
