A thousand peaks and ten thousand valleys(千巖萬谷)
The Song Dynasty in China is divided into
two periods by historians.
The first stage was the Northern Song
Dynasty (960-1127 AD).
The second stage was the Southern Song
Dynasty (AD-1127 to AD 1279).
In 1129 AD, the Southern Song Dynasty moved
the capital to the city (Lin'an), which is the current Hangzhou City of
Zhejiang Province.
After the fall of the Southern Song
Dynasty, a scholar named (Wu Zimu) wrote a book.
This book records many customs in Lin'an
City before the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, and also depicts the urban
landscape at that time and the daily life of people of various identities
living in the city.
A passage in this book describes it as follows.
There is a mountain in Yuhang District of
the city of Hangzhou. The name of this mountain is (Dadi Mountain).
There is a famous Taoist temple on the
mountain. The name of this Taoist temple is (Dongxiao Palace).
According to the records of history books,
(Dongxiao Palace) was established in the Han Dynasty, and it has a history of
more than 1900 years in the Song Dynasty.
In the past 1900 years, in addition to the
continuous expansion of the main building, many ancillary buildings have been
built around.
Therefore, the area covered by (Dongxiao
Palace) is very vast.
There are five famous chained caves in this
area, as well as nine high and low peaks.
Over the years, many famous Taoist monks
have practiced here and achieved good results. There are also many strange
birds and animals on the mountain.
If you stand in the Taoist temple and look
out, you will see countless peaks and valleys, and you will feel grace and
peace.
(Dongxiao Palace) is built against the
mountain wall. When the mountain spring flows down from the mountain, it
splashes onto the red eaves, so you will hear the pleasant sound of water.
When it was cloudy, clouds surrounded the
altar in the square.
When it is sunny you will feel the soft and
warm sunshine.
The trees here are always in the state of
spring and autumn regardless of the four seasons, and the spring water here
seems to have magic power.
When you stand in this place, you will feel
that you can cultivate yourself into a better state in this space.
The direct translation of this idiom means
a thousand peaks and ten thousand valleys.
This idiom is used to describe many peaks
and valleys.
Dear friends, what are your feelings or
thoughts after listening to this story?
Have you visited any Taoist buildings? Have
you ever read any books on Taoist thought?
I hope this story will give you something
new to gain.
(A thousand peaks and ten thousand
valleys)
