Densely populated(人煙稠密)

The Song Dynasty in China is divided into two periods by historians.

The first stage was the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD).

The second stage was the Southern Song Dynasty (AD-1127 to AD 1279).

In 1129 AD, the Southern Song Dynasty moved the capital to the city (Lin'an), which is the current Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province.

After the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, a scholar named (Wu Zimu) wrote a book.

This book records many customs in Lin'an City before the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, and also depicts the urban landscape at that time and the daily life of people of various identities living in the city.

There is a passage in this book as follows.

Hangzhou is a densely populated city. There are hundreds of thousands of households in and around the city, with a population of more than one million.

According to statistics, these residents eat up to 360,000 kilograms of rice every day.

Therefore, on the river connecting the city, there are many boats with rice from the surrounding area from morning to night.

When these ships arrive at the port of Hangzhou, there will be special people responsible for handling and transporting them to various rice shops.

Everything works very well. If you are the owner of a rice shop, you can easily get rice from various origins just by sitting in the shop.

Hangzhou is a densely populated city, and there are countless butcher shops.

Every butcher shop was swept clean, and the knives were sharpened.

On a normal morning, if you pass by these butcher shops, you will see pigs that have been slaughtered and cut in half hanging in the shops. Each butcher shop can sell at least five pigs a day.

If there are large festivals such as the Chinese New Year, the business of these butchers will be several times better than usual.

On the mornings of these big festivals, you'll see at least five professional butchers in every butcher shop.

These butchers can prepare the meat for the customers according to their requirements.

If you come to buy near noon, you will find that all the meat in the butcher shop is sold out.

This idiom means densely populated.

(Densely populated)
