Firewood, Rice, Oil and Salt.

The Song Dynasty in China is divided into two periods by historians.

The first stage was the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD).

The second stage was the Southern Song Dynasty (AD-1127 to AD 1279).

In 1129 AD, the Southern Song Dynasty moved the capital to the city (Lin'an), which is the current Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province.

After the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, a scholar named (Wu Zimu) wrote a book.

This book records many customs in Lin'an City before the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, and also depicts the urban landscape at that time and the daily life of people of various identities living in the city.

A passage in this book describes it as follows.

Hangzhou is a large city, and there are many people living in the city.

This city has a feature that other cities don't have, that is, there are many shops that make and sell dried fish everywhere.

I don't know how many shops there are in total selling dried fish, but I guess there are about 200.

These shops will not be opened in very lively commercial areas, but will be opened near residential areas.

There are also some merchants who will carry a bamboo basket with dried fish and shuttle in the alley to sell.

In addition, some merchants will set up street stalls to sell dried fish.

There is a saying that there are seven things everyone uses every day.

Firewood, rice, oil ,salt, sauces, vinegar and tea.

I think people living in the city of Hangzhou should have eight items that they use every day. The eighth item is dried fish. .

Hangzhou has a variety of dried fish made from seafood, which is an important ingredient that both rich and poor people will definitely use in their daily cooking.

This idiom is used to describe all the necessities of life.

Dear friends, what are your feelings or thoughts after listening to this story?

(Firewood, Rice, Oil and Salt.)
