High and steep mountains(崇山峻嶺)
The woods and bamboo forests in this place
are tall and dense.
The most famous calligraphy work in running
script in Chinese history is a preface written by a famous calligrapher (Wang
Xizhi) of the Jin Dynasty.
In the spring of AD 353, at the age of 50,
he and 40 other celebrities of the time gathered in a pavilion in what is now
Kuaiji Mountain in Zhejiang Province. The name of this pavilion is (Lanting).
Why do they gather here? This is because
there was a custom in ancient China.
On this day of the year, everyone goes to
the river and everyone washes their bodies in water soaked in herbs.
People at that time believed that by doing
so, they could eliminate misfortunes and gain blessings.
After they finished the ceremony, everyone
sat by the river, and everyone began to drink and eat.
They ate and drank while playing a popular
game at the time.
They would dig a winding ditch next to the
river, and then everyone would sit by that ditch.
Then they would put a cup on a small plate.
This small plate with a cup on it floats
slowly along the tortuous current.
If the plate stops in front of one of the
people, that person drinks the rice wine from the cup.
The person also has to write a poem at once
and read it to everyone.
During the open-air luncheon, he and his
close friends wrote a total of 37 poems.
A good friend who attended the event proposed.
We should put these poems today into a
collection of poems.
Everyone agreed with the idea.
(Wang Xizhi) wrote a preface to this
collection of poems.
The second paragraph of this preface is as
follows.
There are tall and steep mountains in this
place, and the forests and bamboo forests in this place are tall and dense.
There is also a clear and fast stream, like
a green ribbon around the pavilion.
We dug a winding ditch beside this stream,
and we all sat beside this ditch.
The first idiom means tall and steep
mountains.
The second idiom means dense and tall
forests and bamboo forests.
Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
What game do you guys play when you drink?
Which is the highest mountain you've climbed?
I hope this story will give you something
new to gain.

place are tall and dense.)
