Many different instruments(絲竹管絃)
We read poetry aloud while drinking(一觴一詠)
The most famous calligraphy work in running
script in Chinese history is a preface written by a famous calligrapher (Wang
Xizhi) of the Jin Dynasty.
In the spring of AD 353, at the age of 50,
he and 40 other celebrities of the time gathered in a pavilion in what is now
Kuaiji Mountain in Zhejiang Province. The name of this pavilion is (Lanting).
Why do they gather here? This is because
there was a custom in ancient China.
On this day of the year, everyone goes to
the river and everyone washes their bodies in water soaked in herbs.
People at that time believed that by doing
so, they could eliminate misfortunes and gain blessings.
After they finished the ceremony, everyone
sat by the river, and everyone began to drink and eat.
They ate and drank while playing a popular
game at the time.
A total of 41 people participated in this
open-air luncheon.
26 of them wrote 37 poems that afternoon.
15 of them could not complete the task of
writing poetry and were punished.
These 15 people drank a lot of Chinese rice
wine
.
A good friend who attended the event
proposed.
We should put these poems today into a
collection of poems.
Everyone agreed with the idea.
(Wang Xizhi) wrote a preface to this
collection of poems.
The third paragraph of this preface is as
follows.
We are all gathered here today, although
there are no different musical instruments to drive the atmosphere, but we all
drink together, write poems and read poems together.
In this process, each of us expresses our
most sincere emotions and feelings.
The first idiom means many different
musical instruments.
The second idiom means reading a poem while
drinking.
Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
How long has it been since you spent a good
afternoon with your good friends? Are your former good friends still in touch?
I hope this story will give you something new to gain.
絲竹管絃((Many different instruments))
(We read poetry aloud while drinking)
