You must not be ashamed to ask(詢於芻蕘)
(The Book of Songs) is the earliest poetry
collection in China.
There are 305 poems in this book.
The poems were written over a period of 500
years, from the 11th century BC to the 6th century BC.
The content of these poems is mainly
divided into three categories.
The first category is the folk poetry from
all over China at that time
The second category is the poetry of the
Zhou Dynasty that ruled China at that time.
The third category is the poetry of the
royal family and nobles in the Zhou Dynasty.
One of them is a poem in which a loyal
minister offers his advice and counsel to the king. The minister's name is (Fan
Bo).
The gist of a passage in this poem is as
follows.
Your actions have brought great trouble to
the people.
You come up with a lot of ideas but you
don't take any action, you don't consider objective facts, you make decisions
according to your mood.
You lack integrity and do not distinguish
right from wrong, and you lack vision for the future development of the entire
kingdom.
You should treat all people with lenient
laws, you should amend those laws that are outdated, people want to be free
from pain and have a stable life.
Do you remember that word of wisdom? You
have to ask and listen to the lowest people who mow grass and chop wood.
There are many disasters and wars that
threaten our entire kingdom right now, and you shouldn't be drinking and
feasting every day.
I wrote this poem to advise you.
I beg you to listen to these words I say, I
beseech you not to laugh at these words of advice I say, I beseech you not to
despise these words of advice I say.
This idiom means that you should ask the
opinion of those who cut grass and wood.
This idiom reminds us to remain humble in
the face of some who are not as good as us.

其中有一首詩，是一個忠心的大臣提出他對國王的建議與忠告。這個大臣的名字叫做(凡伯)。
這首詩中有一段的大意如下。
你的行為已經帶給百姓們很大的麻煩。
你提出很多構想但是你卻沒有任何行動，你不考慮客觀的事實，你照著你的心情好壞做決定。
你缺少誠信又不分辨是非，你對於整個王國的未來發展缺乏遠見。
你應該用寬容的法令對待所有人民，你應該修改那些已經過時的法令，百姓們渴望脫離痛苦並且擁有安定的生活。
你記得那一句智慧的話嗎?你必須要去請教並請傾聽那些割草與砍柴的最低層人民的話。
目前我們整個王國正面臨許多災難與戰爭的危害，你不應該還每天喝酒宴樂。
我寫這一首詩來勸告你。
我懇求你聽我所說的這些話，我懇求你不要嘲笑我所說的這些忠告，我懇求你不要輕視我說的這些忠告。
這句成語的意思是你應該詢問那些割草與砍柴的人的意見。
這句成語提醒我們面對一些身分地位不如我們的人時要保持虛心。
