He is one of the most famous military staff
officers in Chinese history. There is a story about him in the history books.
After the fall of the Qin Dynasty, there
were many military forces in China.
Among these military forces, the two
largest were the Chu Kingdom led by Xiang Yu and the Han Kingdom led by Liu
Bang.
The two kingdoms were at war with each
other, and both kingdoms hoped to defeat the other and unite all of China.
In 204 BC, the army of the Chu Kingdom
defeated the Han Kingdom in several successive wars. Liu Bang, the king of the
Han Kingdom, sent an envoy to the Chu Kingdom. The envoy told Xiang Yu that he
hoped the two sides could negotiate peace.
Xiang Yu and Fan Zeng held a military
meeting, and Xiang Yu believed that the two sides could sign this peace treaty.
Fan Zeng disagreed, and Fan Zeng said to
Xiang Yu
We should not sign a peace treaty with him.
We should use our current advantages to completely defeat the other party.
Xiang Yu finally decided to follow Fan
Zeng's advice.
Xiang Yu sent an envoy to the Han Kingdom.
The envoy told Liu Bang that the Chu Kingdom had decided not to accept peace
talks.
The envoy returned to the Chu Kingdom and
reported to Xiang Yu that he had successfully completed his mission.
The envoy told Xiang Yu something else that
he found strange.
Said the envoy.
When I arrived in the Han Kingdom, they
held a dinner party to welcome me. During the dinner, I happened to overhear a
shocking secret.
This amazing secret is that Liu Bang and
Fan Zeng are in secret contact.
After hearing this, Xiang Yu did not go
directly to Fan Zeng to verify the matter. He kept it in his heart.
From that day on, Xiang Yu began to
distrust Fan Zeng more and more, and Xiang Yu began to alienate Fan Zeng.
Fan Zeng is a very intelligent man, and he
also felt Xiang Yu's distrust and alienation towards him. He noticed that Xiang
Yu began to guard himself against him and did not allow him to participate in
important decisions and meetings within the Chu Kingdom.
Fan Zeng was very disappointed and sad. He
also felt very angry because he had sincerely hoped to help Xiang Yu complete
the cause of unifying all of China.
One day he said to Xiang Yu.
I think we have a clear advantage now. We
should be able to defeat the Han and unify all of China.
No matter what happens next, I think you
can make the right decision and judgement on your own.
I'm getting very old, so I want to quit my
job and go back to my hometown.
Xiang Yu agreed to his request.
After Fan Zeng left Xiang Yu's army, he
fell seriously ill and died on his way back to his hometown.

秦王朝滅亡之後，中國境內有很多股軍事勢力。
這些軍事勢力中，最大的兩股力量是(項羽)所領導的楚王國與(劉邦)所領導的漢王國。
這兩個王國彼此爭戰，這兩個王國都希望能夠打敗對方，統一整個中國。
西元前204年，楚王國的軍隊連續在好幾次的戰爭中打敗了漢王國，漢王國的國王劉邦派遣使者到楚王國，這個使者對項羽說希望雙方能夠和談。
項羽與范增開了一場軍事會議，項羽認為雙方可以簽訂這份和平條約。
范增表示反對，范增對項羽說。
我們不應該跟他簽定和平條約，我們要利用現在的優勢徹底打敗對方。
項羽最後決定聽從范增的建議。
項羽派遣一個使者到去漢王國，這個使者向劉邦表示楚王國決定不接受和談。
這個使者回到楚王國，他跟項羽回報他已經順利完成這個任務。
這個使者又跟項羽報告了一件他覺得奇怪的事情。
這個使者說。
我到了漢王國的時候，他們舉辦了一場晚宴接待我，在這場晚宴的過程中，我不小心聽到了一個很驚人的秘密。
這個驚人的秘密就是劉邦與范增正在進行秘密聯繫。
項羽聽到這件事情之後，他沒有直接去向范增查證這件事情，他把這件事情一直放在心裡。
從那一天起，項羽開始愈來愈不信任范增，項羽開始疏遠范增。
范增是一個非常聰明的人，他也感受到了項羽對他的不信任與疏遠，他發現自已項羽開始防備自己，並且不讓自己參與楚王國內的重要決策與會議。
范增感覺到非常的失望與傷心，他同時感到很氣憤，因為他很真誠的希望可以幫助項羽一起完成統一整個中國的事業。
有一天，他對項羽說。
我認為我們目前已經有很明顯的優勢，我們應該可以打敗漢王國並且統一整個中國了。
接下來不論發生任何情況，我認為你可以自己做出正確的決定與判斷。
我的年紀已經很大了，所以我想辭職並回到我的故鄉了。
項羽答應了他的請求。
范增離開項羽的軍隊後，他生了一場重病，他死在返回故鄉的半路上。
