He always brings a book with him when he goes to plough the fields.(帶經而鋤)

There was an official in China's Western Han Dynasty, his name was (Ni Kuan).

There is a story about him recorded in the history books

When he was young, he studied with famous scholars of that time, and his academic performance was very good, but he had no job after graduation.

He could only help others in farming to maintain his own life.

This did not depress him. He faced the dissatisfaction in life with a very optimistic and positive attitude.

He brings books with him every day when he ploughs the fields, and he will use the breaks in ploughing to continue reading.

A few years later, he was recommended to become a minor official in the central government and was sent to the north of China to manage cattle.

He took his work very seriously and did not let his low position get in the way.

A few years later, when he returned to the capital for a routine annual work report, he saw that his superior looked worried, so he asked his superior what had happened.

His supervisor told him

My official documents were not well written, so some of my proposals were always rejected by the king.

He took the initiative to tell his superior.

I have been practising my writing skills. I can help you write an official document. Would you let me try?

His supervisor saw his sincere attitude and thought that the work reports he had written to himself in recent years had been very neat, so his supervisor said to him.

Then please write this official document for me.

The next day, after his supervisor had read the official document he had written, his supervisor said to him,

Your official document is so well written that I cannot change a single word in it, so I will use the official document you have written to make another proposal to the king.

His supervisor handed the document to the king,

When the king saw the document, he said to his supervisor.

I agree with your proposal, but I would like to ask you a question.

Your official document is so well written that it surpasses your previous standards. Who wrote this document?

said his superior to the king.

This official document was written by one of my subordinates named (Ni Kuan).

said the king to his superior.

Bring this person to me. This person has great talents. I will give him an important post in our dynasty.

From then on, he became a senior official in the central government of the Han dynasty. He assisted the king in establishing many important systems and regulations.

The literal translation of this idiom is that he always takes a book with him when he goes out to plough the fields.

This idiom is used to describe a person who maintains a passion for learning despite a hard life.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts do you have after listening to this story?

Do you think you are doing your best in the work you are doing now? If a good opportunity comes your way, do you think you are capable enough to take it?

I hope this story has given you some new insights.

(He always brings a book with him when he goes to plough the fields.)
