Dogs in Sichuan Province bark at the sun(蜀犬吠日)
During the Tang Dynasty in China, there was
a famous poet who was also an official in the central government of the Tang
Dynasty.
When he was 51 years old, he was
transferred to serve as an official in what is now the Sichuan Province of
China.
Sichuan Province in China is a basin with a
terrain surrounded by mountains. It is an area with very inconvenient
transport.
He later wrote an article describing the
scenery around Sichuan Province and his feelings at the time.
One of the sections is described below.
In the south of Sichuan Province there is a
famous mountain called Qionglai Mountain. It is very steep and difficult to
cross.
At the foot of this mountain there is a
river. The name of this river is Lujiang River.
The climate in this place is very special.
I feel that a hole has been opened in the sky here, and the gods are constantly
pouring water down from this hole to the human world.
Although the weather here is not good, it
rarely rains and it is cloudy almost all year round.
The people who live here are like fish
living in water, and they have become accustomed to this wet environment.
According to what the people here told me,
if you live here, you can only see the sun for a few days a year.
The dogs raised by the people here rarely
see the sun, so these dogs will be frightened by the bright sunshine on these
days. These dogs will bark loudly out of fear in this rare sunny weather.
This idiom is used to describe something
that is so rare that it frightens those who see it.
It is also used to describe a person who is
not knowledgeable enough and is surprised by a very ordinary thing.
Dear friend, what inspirations or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
What is the climate like in the city where
you live? Have you ever travelled to a country that impressed you?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
(Dogs in Sichuan Province bark at the
sun)
