There are two very powerful tribes, one is
the Xiao Yuezhi tribe and the other is the Qiang tribe.
He was appointed by the king to guard the
borders with these tribes.
One day he received information that the
Qiang tribe had sent a very large army to attack the Xiaoyuezhi tribe.
Some of his non-commissioned officers
happily told him.
Great, these two tribes that are hostile to
us are at war with each other, and we can benefit from it.
He said seriously to his sergeants.
I don't agree with you.
I think we need to keep peace with these
tribes and we can develop this area together.
We can all live safely on this land.
Now the Qiang tribe is relying on its
mighty power to attack (the Xiao Yuezhi tribe). The Xiao Yuezhi tribe is in
great danger. We should help the Xiao Yuezhi tribe resist the Qiang tribe's
attack.
He then opened the gates of the city under
his administration and allowed the Xiao Yuezhi people to enter the city to
escape the Qiang attacks.
His actions later won the gratitude of the
Xiao Yuezhi people, who were very happy.
The generals of the Eastern Han Dynasty who
had been stationed here before liked to see us fight each other, but Deng Xun
was completely different from those previous generals.
Deng Xun hoped that we could all live in
harmony. He took concrete actions to show his compassion and love for us, the
Yuezhi people.
All of us in the Xiao Yuezhi tribe will
trust Deng Xun from now on. As long as he is with us, we will never again come
into conflict with the Eastern Han Dynasty.
From then on, the Xiaoyuezhi Tribe and the
Eastern Han Dynasty had a harmonious relationship.
After a while, other tribes saw that the
Xiaoyuezhi Tribe and the Eastern Han Dynasty had gained security and economic
prosperity because of their harmony with each other. Other tribes also
expressed their willingness to trust the Eastern Han Dynasty and establish
harmonious relations with it.
The meaning of this idiom is that we can
use the contradictions between the two foreign races to bring them into
conflict with each other to achieve the result of reducing the power of the two
foreign races.
