famous musician and scholar named (Huan Tan).
There is a story about him in the history
books.
He likes to read a lot. Books were very
precious in ancient China.
If he heard that someone else had a book
that he had not read, he would want to borrow it and read it.
One day he heard that a scholar had some
books on Taoism in his house. He was very interested, so he went to the
scholar's house and said to the scholar
He said to the scholar
I want to study Taoist thought. Could you
lend me some books on Taoist thought?
The scholar said to him.
Why do you want to borrow books on Taoism
from me?
From what I know about you, you are an
expert in Confucianism. You value the practice of etiquette and morality
between people in your life. Your life is controlled by worldly fame and
interests. Since you are used to such a life model, why do you still study
Taoism?
Let me tell you that there are some very
important core views in Taoist thought.
Taoist thought believes that we should
remain as innocent as babies, that we should coexist peacefully with all the
animals and plants on this earth, and that we should learn from nature.
We should stay away from the desires and
temptations of the world and not pursue its fame and interests.
We should keep our life and mentality
simple.
There is a big difference between Taoist
thought and Confucian thought. I think if you like Confucian thought, you
should not study Taoist thought.
I think if you study both thoughts at the
same time, you will not be able to learn both thoughts well.
If you study these two thoughts at the same
time, it will not be good for you. When you make some important decisions in
your life in the future, you will be tangled up and confused.
This idiom is used to describe a person who
is controlled by worldly fame and interests and cannot be free.
