In 334 AD, he was recommended to join the
city government of Luling City in Jiangxi Province of the Eastern Jin Dynasty
as a staff member for general affairs.
A few months into his tenure, a day came.
The general who ruled the city came to see him for a conference.
During the conversation between him and the
general, his words fully demonstrated his knowledge and cultivation. However,
when the general asked him about some prices and the living conditions of the
people in the city, he was unable to answer the general. .

When the general saw that he could not answer
his question, he picked up the whisk in his hand, covered his mouth and smiled.
After the meeting that day, he felt very
ashamed. He felt that his talents were not up to the job, so he handed in his
resignation.
After he had resigned, after he had stayed
at home for more than ten days, the general came to see him at home.
He was surprised and asked the general why
he had come to see him.
said the general.
I asked you earlier to join the Luling city
