杜十娘也順利地脫離這個工作，她與李甲要回到李甲的故鄉結婚。
可是令人沒有想到的事，當故事進展得很順利的時候，李甲突然開始擔憂他的父親不會接受杜十娘，因為杜十娘曾經擔任過社會地位很低的工作。
李甲後來在回故鄉的路途中就背叛了杜十娘，他對杜十娘做了很不好的事情。導致杜十娘自殺。
李甲在杜十娘自殺後也覺得自責，李甲後來就發瘋了。
馮夢龍在這個故事中描繪出一個勇敢追求愛情而且為了愛情願意付出所有的勇敢女子的形象，也描繪出一個當愛情面對困難時就選擇逃避的懦弱男子的形象。
