In the Yuan Dynasty of China, there was a mysterious playwright who wrote many plays. His name was Zheng Tingyu.

He wrote more than 23 plays, most of which are lost.

Among his only five surviving plays, one is based on a historical story between the Chu Kingdom and the Wu Kingdom in China's Spring and Autumn Period.

The outline of the story in the second act of the play is as follows

In the Spring and Autumn Period of China, the king of the Wu Kingdom had a sword called (Zhanlu) which disappeared.

After investigation by the king of the Wu Kingdom, he discovered that the sword was actually in the hands of the king of the Chu Kingdom.

As the king of the Chu Kingdom was unwilling to return the sword, the Wu Kingdom sent a general named Wu Zixu to lead an army of 400,000 men to attack the Chu Kingdom.

The king of the Chu Kingdom sent a very cunning prime minister named Fei Wuji to lead the army into battle.

The armies of both sides met at the border of the Chu and Wu kingdoms.

Wu Zixu said angrily when he saw Fei Wuji.

You framed my father and brother, so my father and brother were sentenced to death by the king of the Chu Kingdom. There is a saying that the less you want to see your enemy, the more likely you are to meet him.

I see you on the battlefield today. I believe this is a chance given to me by God.

I hate you very much and I want to avenge my family today.

I must kill you today.

Fei Wuji laughed and replied.

Your father and brother are both dead. You are still very young. I think your experience and skills are insufficient. I will kill you today and let you meet your father and brother in the underworld.

The armies of both sides began a bloody and fierce war.

After a few hours, the Chu Kingdom's army led by Fei Wuji was defeated, and the Chu soldiers retreated in haste.

Wu Zixu led the soldiers to hunt down Fei Wuji.

The literal translation of this saying is that the less you want to see an enemy, the more likely you are to meet them.

This idiom is used to describe a person who will inevitably see someone they least want to see.

It is also used to describe a pair of lovers or couples. They are destined to be together again in the previous life.

The lovers or couple often quarrel with each other but always come back together.

Dear friend, what inspirations or thoughts do you have after listening to this story?

Do you often quarrel with your beloved? The ancient Chinese believed that the relationship between lovers and enemies is very similar. Do you agree with this view?

I hope this story can give you some new insights.

(The less you want to see an enemy of yours, the more likely you are to meet that enemy.)
