In the Western Jin Dynasty of China, there was a famous minister who was also a famous rich man in Chinese history. His name was Shi Chong.

He once published a collection of poems, and this idiom comes from the preface he wrote for this collection of poems.

The gist of the preface is as follows.

In the year 297 A.D., I was assigned to serve as a military leader in the provinces of Jiangsu, Henan and Shandong.

I have a good friend named Wang Xu, who is also a general.

Wang Xu was about to be transferred back to the capital to take up a new post, so I gave him a farewell banquet.

The banquet was held in one of my villas in a valley in Henan Province.

There are many thick and tall trees in this valley. There are many fruit trees, bamboo and many Chinese herbs planted around the villa.

There is a clear river not far from the villa. This river is called (Jingu River).

The weather was nice on the day of the farewell party, so we held it on the grass by the river.

We played from day to night, changing the place where we drank and talked according to the atmosphere.

If there are clouds in the sky, we go to a high hill to watch the scenery. When the sun is too strong, we go to the river in the forest to play in the water.

We also prepared many different musical instruments, and each of us took the instrument we were good at playing.

Sometimes we play as an ensemble, and sometimes one of us plays solo.

We also played a game where everyone had to write a poem within a limited time to express their feelings about attending this banquet.

If someone cannot write a poem within the time limit, that person will be punished.

This man wants to drink three large bowls of Chinese rice wine.

It really is a beautiful afternoon.

We all felt very happy, but perhaps because we were so happy, we all felt a sigh in our hearts at the same time.

We lament how short human life is.

None of us has control over our own lives and none of us knows when death will come.

I have compiled the poems we wrote today into a collection of poems so that future generations who love to read poetry can feel our inner feelings through these poems.

I've written this preface and recorded everyone's name so that future generations will know who the author of these poems was.

The literal translation of this idiom is that at this event on the Jingu River, those who cannot write a poem will be punished by drinking three glasses of Chinese rice wine.

This idiom is used to describe a person who is punished by drinking three glasses of wine at a banquet.

Dear friend, what inspirations or thoughts do you have after listening to this story?

Did you write poetry when you were young? If you wrote poetry when you were young, how long has it been since you wrote poetry?

I hope this story can give you some new insights.

(You will be punished by drinking three large glasses of Chinese rice wine.)
