A person who is honest and upright.(衾影無慚)

A person who is honest and upright.

There was a famous scholar in China's Song Dynasty, his name was Cai Yuanding, and a story about him is recorded in history books.

There was a very famous scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty. His name was Zhu Xi. Zhu Xi opened a school in his hometown.

Cai Yuanding was five years younger than him. In 1160 AD, he went to Zhu Xi's school.

After Zhu Xi talked to him, Zhu Xi said to him in surprise.

Your knowledge is so rich, and you have many unique insights into ancient Chinese classics.

How can you be my student?

I think your talents and knowledge are similar to mine. If you like, we can be friends.

He and Zhu Xi later became very good friends.

In 1197 AD, Zhu Xi was involved in a political incident.

Zhu Xi's school and works were suppressed by the central government. Cai Yuanding was also involved because he was a good friend of Zhu Xi.

Because of this incident, he, one of his sons and a student were forced to move to what is now Hunan Province in China.

He did not blame others for this incident, nor did he lose his passion for life.

He often said to his son and disciples

I live a very sincere life. When I am alone or with others, I always adhere to the principle of being a good person.

When I go out alone, I will not do anything to make my shadow feel ashamed, and when I sleep alone, I will not do anything to make my quilt feel ashamed.

I hope you can learn from my spirit and never change your trust in the world and your insistence on personal principles because you have been treated unfairly in your life.

The following year he died of illness in Hunan Province.

After his death, his body was returned to his hometown for burial.

The literal translation of this idiom is that when I go out alone, I will do nothing to make my shadow feel ashamed, and when I sleep alone, I will do nothing to make my quilt feel ashamed.

This idiom is used to describe a person who is honest and upright.

Dear friend, what inspirations or thoughts do you have after listening to this story?

How do you react emotionally when you are treated unfairly? Where would you like to be buried when you die?

I hope this story can give you some new insights.

(A person who is honest and upright.)
