There is a story about him in the history
books.
He entered the central government of the
Han Dynasty as an official at the age of 22. He felt that the political system
at that time had great flaws, so he expressed his views to the king.
The king liked Jia Yi's views very much,
but Jia Yi's views made many princes in power very unhappy.
These princes concentrated their efforts on
opposing the king's political reforms. These princes also slandered Jia Yi.
Later, the king of the Han dynasty did not
adopt Jia Yi's views because the opposition from the princes was too strong.
The Han king even transferred Jia Yi out of
the capital to serve as a mid-level official in Changsha, in present-day Hunan
province.
After being transferred to Changsha City,
Jia Yi feared that he would die in the humid and hot city.
This was the lowest point in his life.
When he was 28 years old, his life took a
turn for the better.
The king suddenly remembered that Jia Yi
had left the capital for a long time, so the king ordered him to return to the
capital.
On the day he returned to the capital, the
king happened to hold a grand sacrificial ceremony.
That night the king talked to him in the
palace.
The king talked to him about sacrifice. The
king talked to him a lot about death and some strange experiences he had had in
life that could not be explained by common sense.
He had a long talk with the king that
night, and the king listened attentively to his views on various supernatural
phenomena.
The king admired his arguments. The king
felt that his views were very reasonable and profound.
They talked in the palace until late at
night.
The next day, at a meeting of all the
ministers, the king said
I talked to Jia Yi until midnight last
night because I hadn't seen him for three years.
My knowledge was originally much worse than
his.
During the three years that Jia Yi was transferred
to Changsha, I spent a lot of time improving my knowledge.
I originally thought that after those three
years my academic level would catch up with Jia Yi's.
But I did not expect that he had not
stopped learning during those three years. During yesterday's conversation, I
noticed that his level of knowledge has improved a lot compared to three years
ago.
The king sighed after saying this.
said the king. It seems that I will have to
spend a lot of time studying before I can catch up with his current level of
knowledge.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
Will you stop learning because you are at a
low point? What are your goals in terms of academic level?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
