Sima Qian is China's most eminent
historian. His history book is one of the most classic books in China.
The name of this book is (Historical
Records).
The characters recorded in the books
written by historians before him were all aristocrats.
When he wrote this history book, he added
some special chapters. In these chapters he recorded the biographies of some
civilians who behaved morally and righteously, had simple and humble
characters, and behaved differently from the general public.
In one chapter, he recorded the stories of
some famous businessmen of the time.
In this chapter he published some of his
observations on human social phenomena.
Farmers farm so that society has enough
food, craftsmen produce so that society has enough tools, and merchants buy and
sell goods so that society can circulate.
When the government of a country is capable
enough to create a stable society, the people of that country will begin to pay
attention to morality and etiquette.
When the people of a country have enough
daily necessities such as food and clothing, the people of that country will
begin to care about glory and shame.
A person with high moral standards will,
after becoming rich, concentrate on how to make society better. A person who
cares only about himself, after he becomes rich, will concentrate on how money
can make his life more enjoyable.
You can find more fish in a big, deep
river, and you can find more animals in a big, tall mountain.
In the same way, you can see that many
people like to gather around rich people. If the rich person goes bankrupt, you
will find that all the people who gathered around him suddenly disappear.
I think everyone has the desire to get
rich, whether they are commoners or nobles.
There is a saying that describes this
phenomenon.
Look at the people in this society,
everyone is running around in a hurry with a happy expression on their face.
Why do they behave like that? Because they are chasing money.
The direct translation of this saying is
that these people have happy expressions and busy behaviour.
