There was a lot of dust on the road after the carriage passed, and the dust looked like rolling waves.(滾滾紅塵)
In the late Ming Dynasty of China, there
was a famous writer called (Feng Menglong).
He wrote a collection of short stories.
There is a story in this book that is set
in the Tang Dynasty.
The protagonist of this story is called (Ma
Zhou).
This story describes his legendary life,
his journey from a poor commoner to a prominent official.
Ma Zhou is a man of rich knowledge and high
ideals.
He left his hometown to go to the capital
of the Tang Dynasty.
He hopes to find an opportunity to develop
his talents in the capital.
A few weeks after leaving his hometown, he
had reached a city not far from the capital.
The city is called Xinfeng.
It was already evening when Ma Zhou arrived
in Xinfeng City. He saw that there were many carriages going back and forth on
the road in the city, so there was a lot of dust on the road. The dust looked
like rolling waves.
He saw many restaurants along the main road,
and many tired travellers went into these restaurants.
He decided to find a hotel to stay in the
city tonight.
He entered a hotel by chance. After
checking in, he went to the hotel restaurant to have dinner.
The hotel where he was staying was doing
very well. There happened to be a lot of group travellers staying in the hotel
that night, so all the staff in the hotel were very busy.
He sat on a chair in the restaurant for
almost ten minutes, but no one came to serve him.
His mood changed from relaxed to angry and
he shouted at the hotel staff.
I've been sitting here for a long time, why
doesn't anyone come and serve me?
Are you looking down on me? Do you think
that since I am only one person, my purchasing power must be low, so you ignore
me?
When the restaurant owner heard Ma Zhou
screaming, he immediately came over to serve Ma Zhou.
The hotel owner greeted Ma Zhou politely
and apologised to Ma Zhou several times. Ma Zhou was not a narrow-minded person
at all, so he no longer felt angry.
Ma Zhou was a good drinker, so after
ordering a few dishes, he ordered five large pots of wine.
When the boss heard that he wanted so much
wine, he said to him.
Do you want to drink so much wine by
yourself? Do you have any friends who want to eat with you?
Ma Zhou said to the boss with a smile.
I usually have to drink ten large jugs of
wine before I get drunk, because I have to rush to the capital tomorrow, so today
I will only drink five large jugs of wine. Don't doubt it, please bring these
wines up quickly. I will finish the wine and eat. I went to my room to rest.
Because his behaviour and way of speaking
were different from ordinary people, the owner of this hotel was deeply
impressed by him.
The direct translation of this idiom is
that there is a lot of dust on the road after the carriage has passed, and the
dust looks like rolling waves.
It is used to describe the busy world we
live in.
Dear friend, how do you feel or what do you
think after listening to this story?
Have you ever had an experience like Ma
Zhou's in a restaurant? If you were Ma Zhou, could you quickly calm down and
stop being angry?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
(There was a lot of dust on the road
after the carriage passed, and the dust looked like rolling waves.)
