He beat his father-in-law(撾婦翁)

There was a famous minister in the Eastern Han Dynasty of China, his name was (Di Wu Lun). There is a story about him recorded in the history books.

He originally served as a mid-level local official. In 53 AD he followed his superiors to the capital of the Eastern Han Dynasty and they went to meet the king.

He and his superiors were received by the king, who spoke to them separately.

(Di Wu Lun) gave a specific and unique analysis of many issues raised by the king, so the king had a good impression of him after the meeting.

The king believed that (Di Wu Lun) was a man with rich knowledge and a sincere attitude. The king wanted to let (Di Wu Lun) enter the central government and hold more important positions.

That night, the king sent some special people to investigate all the background information on Di Wu Lun.

The next day the king received him again.

The king wanted to confirm some of the things he had investigated.

About half an hour after the king had spoken to  Di Wu Lun, the king suddenly asked him with a smile.

I have heard one thing. That thing was that you once beat your father-in-law because you had a quarrel with him. I have also heard that you are very proud of yourself and that you have a very bad relationship with your cousins. Your cousins invited you for dinner, but you deliberately refused to go.

Are these two negative things true about you?

The Di Wu Lun replied after hearing the king's question.

I married a second wife after my first wife died, and my second wife also fell ill and died a few years ago. Now my third wife is with me.

Because of the war, my three wives were all orphans.

All three of their fathers were dead when they married me.

China has had a lot of trouble in recent years, and there have been many wars in different places.

Because of the turmoil, food prices have been very high in recent years. I was embarrassed to go to my cousin's house to eat because I didn't want to add to their expenses.

That night the king again investigated whether the words spoken by (Di Wu Lun) were true.

After further examination it was found that what (Di Wu Lun) had said was true.

A few days later, the king issued a new personnel order and arranged for (Di Wu Lun) to join the central government of the Eastern Han Dynasty as a mid-level official.

This idiom directly translates to him beating his father-in-law.

This idiom is used to describe a person who is slandered for no reason.

Dear friend, how do you feel or what do you think after listening to this story?

When you are slandered for no reason, how do you defend yourself? Have you ever been angry because you couldn't control it?

I hope this story can give you some new insights.

撾婦翁(He beat his father-in-law(撾婦翁)
